GUIDE TO OBTAINING CMF SUPPORT & EQUIPMENT
PROCEDURES FOR SUPPLYING A HART WALKER
A child and family needs to be referred to the Child Mobility Foundation in the first instance.
This occurs in many different ways –
• Physiotherapists and other medical professionals contact CMF Co-ordinator • Lions hear of a child that may benefit
• Parents/caregivers find CMF through the website
• General public enquiry
Firstly the child must be assessed by the trained medical team, the Lions Child Mobility Foundation (CMF) Physiotherapist and Orthotist (who have the appropriate qualifications to allow them to work with Hart Walkers) to ascertain if a Hart Walker is appropriate or other equipment is required. Before this can proceed, the Lions CMF Grant Application needs completing since as this covers the privacy requirements. If other Government funded equipment suits the child better or a wheelchair is required then the family are referred to the appropriate agency. The trustees of CMF and Lions members do not make the decision as to whether a child is referred or not. This is strictly a medical decision.
If the medical team agree a Hart Walker is required then the CMF Co-ordinator is contacted. Genny Hanning then ascertains the location of the family and contacts the appropriate district mobility chairman to commence seeking funds. These can come from grants, appeals, fundraising sites such as Give-a-litttle as well as family sources.
Once funding has been secured the child is measured and attends a clinic for the Hart Walker to be fitted. Clinics are held six monthly when adjustments are made as the child grows and new boots and parts are supplied.
As the child grows, a heavy duty walker may need to be supplied. When the child grows to a point where a Hart Walker is no longer suitable the medical team makes that decision and the walker is returned to CMF.
PROCEDURES FOR SUPPLYING OTHER EQUIPMENT
A similar process to that of supplying Hart Walkers is followed. CMF will only take on cases where medical professionals have made recommendations for particular equipment.
DMO suits may be provided for children. These are very expensive and need to be replaced as the child grows, therefore it is up to the Lions Clubs involved if they wish to proceed with funding them. Replacement funding is not guaranteed. Assistance with funding for a hoist to a school has been organised. Again, the hoist recommended by the professional team was the one supplied and funding came from various areas as well as Lions. Assistance with funding for disability vehicles has been supplied. The vehicle that the professional team recommends is the one that is funded. Cheaper versions may have problems with load bearing and also be unable to lift heavy wheelchairs etc.
Special wheelchairs have been supplied and again it is the equipment that the professional team requests that is supplied.
